You only know Mary and Charlie as they relate to Frank. Their love for him, their sense of abandonment...he is the center of the show, its protagonist. Ultimately Mary doesn't get much more stage time than Beth or Gussie, though unlike them she is around for the show's entire time span and it's her behavior in the first scene that tells us what and who the show will be about. Charlie is definitely a supporting role in relation to Frank, but a much bigger one than any of the other men in the show. He'd seem more at home in the same Tony category as Frank, say, than the same category as Joe.

We shall see. Whether it's a Tony magnet or not, it will be a great addition to the upcoming Broadway season.
