I have to imagine you've never actually done the show and experienced it from the inside. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but that's my impression from your post. Mary gets more significant stage time than you think. Also, you're certainly right that "it's her behavior in the first scene that tells us what and who the show will be about" - but don't forget the 2nd scene and "Like It Was" which is also pivotal.

"Charlie" is Brown or the Brigadoon character. When referring to Merrily or the "once in love with Amy" guy, it's "Charley." :-)
