"To me, Frank is the leading role of ''Merrily,'' and the plot revolves mostly around HIS moral dilemmas and relationships, namely ''How did you get to be you?'' I don't consider Charley or Mary as comparable leading roles. For instance, you never see Charley's wife or Mary's boyfriends, etc."
But there's a difference between considering a character to be "leading" in a plot and an actor "leading" in a musical. While Frank is certainly the leading character of Merrily, all 3 actors should be considered as leading since they have multiple songs and appear in almost all scenes. Actresses playing Beth and Gussie would be appropriate for featured nominations as their characters don't appear in nearly as much of the show.
Star-power or celebrity/Hollywood status should have no bearing on the re-categorization of awards, though it's understandable why they would be billed first for PR purposes. |

But Eva being the star role doesn't mean Che isn't *also* the star and also the lead... many shows have 2 leads - Chazwaza 01:46 am EDT 07/14/23 |
