Ragtime In Concert at Tanglewood
Posted by: StageStruckLad 12:21 pm EDT 07/11/23

There was an enjoyable one-night performance of "Ragtime In Concert" at Tanglewood this past weekend. It was great to hear the score with the Boston Pops Orchestra (the augmented orchestrations were based on the terrific originals by William David Brohn) and a huge cast. Standout performers were Elizabeth Stanley as Mother, Nikki Renee Daniels as Sarah, and A.J. Shively as Younger Brother. John Cariani seemed to be straining to hit all of the notes in Tateh's songs, and I thought Alton Fitzgerald was a bit underwhelming as Coalhouse. Almost all of the book was removed (I would guess 95 percent or more of the dialogue was cut) which did the show no favors. At the conclusion of "Coalhouse's Soliloquy," Coalhouse raised his hand to signify that he was holding a gun, but there was no gun. A friend who attended with us and had never seen the show didn't pick up on that or what terrorist activities Coalhouse was doing after that. "Atlantic City" was also cut, much to the detriment of the storylines for Evelyn Nesbitt and Harry Houdini. And I especially missed the dialogue and music that usually are heard before "New Music." My guess is that Ragtime is too expensive to be performed onstage with an orchestra and cast as big as the one on Broadway in 1998. So a reduced Ragtime is better than none at all.
