These concerts have to come in at or under 2 hours. Union/overtime issues. That's the answer. This is not Encores, this is about symphony concert contracts.
I agree, though. It's a shame.
The last one of these, in my memory, was A Little Night Music in 2008. Rushed tempos, lots of cuts. It was supposed to star Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson, but Wilson reneged when she was told they would be cutting a portion of "Liaisons." I don't blame her. Though the story had a happy ending - Boston favorite Bobbie Steinbach, who had done the role twice in Boston (with me MD'ing) stepped in and was great - cut and all. But in general - same issues - the material was not given the care it should have gotten in order to get it in without overtime.
