Saw Back to the Future last night (finally made it to the Winter Garden - yay!).

At the TKTS booth I was offered Row B or Row N (show was listed at 30% off, and I was told it's been on the board since Saturday). I usually like to be close, so I took B and it was a very good seat (if you like close), but I was glad it wasn't A. There were times I couldn't see some of the actors' feet, but otherwise fine. And I like seeing the conductor. The ticket was $113 before fees, which I felt was fair in this climate.

So, the show is pretty much what you would expect for a movie to musical piece. I loved the movie when it come out, though I haven't seen it since. Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd are too hard to replace, for me. Roger Bart seems to have made a career of this type of manic character, but he seems too comfortable here. Casey Likes is appealing and talented (I hadn't seen him before), but it's an awfully big job - would be interesting to hear what people who aren't wed to the film think.

A real standout for me is Hugh Coles (oh, I'm just happy people are still naming their kids Hugh) in his Broadway debut as George McFly. He does do an imitation of Crispin Glover from the film, but has more to do in the musical and he's really terrific.

The staging and the effects - and the car - are fine, but often I find that when there's a car on stage, to make it seem like it's really moving, it has to go so slow and deliberate, it kind of works against the realism. The final car thing is excruciatingly slow to me, and I was glad I wasn't dead center - avoiding spoilers.

The score is fine, but not distinctive, and there are a lot of full ensemble production numbers (I guess that's what you'd call them) - too many of them, though the ensemble is really great. Choreography and costumes are odd at times. Lots of references to the number 88 (especially in one particular superfluous number) - a reference to the speedometer in the film or something I'm missing.

The crowd went wild throughout the whole thing. To me, it's a harmless adaptation and if people (tour*sts!) enjoy it, that's good.

And, yes "the song" is there, but again, for me it also can't come close to the original.
