| Whenever a singer hits a relatively high note, or can sustain it for more than a few seconds, the audience goes crazy. They do it again and again and again for repeated displays of vocal calisthenics. Every time a little bit of talent is on display in a slightly impressive way, the audience is off and running with a level of robust applause that ultimately drowns out the very talent they are celebrating. Yes. Although I think "applause" isn't the issue - it's the vocal reactions. I had posted here recently about the way over the top segment of the audience at my recent college students' musical theatre showcase. General audience, including some agents, producers, etc - but yes, a lot of students/friends, and of course they were the ones with the hyperbolic reactions. Not only the hooting and hollering and literal screaming at the ends of songs or at someone's entrance (I'd love to know who was getting murdered, for god's sake?? Sure sounded that way...), but there was one singer who opted up to a high Bb at the end of her song - but no one got to hear it, because the note was immediately followed by the overloud audience response. I really felt bad for her. And, ya know, I'm sitting there at the piano, itching to get up and to ask everyone to please respect the performers and save the craziness for the curtain call. But of course you can't do that. Meaning, you can't tell an audience they're overdoing it, because then they'll take offense and feel like they're being lectured. And I'm sure there would be a lot of "who, me? I'm just supporting my classmates" etc. Ugh. |
