I assure you, for the majority of people who are hooting and hollering, it is also a genuine reaction, rather than performative.

And unfortunately, the reaction of college students to their friends has always been outsize: when I was in college nigh on 20 something years ago, I was often surprised by just how overly appreciative my classmates were. At the time, I internally tutted them, now I envy their freedom to express how they felt long before I found the same freedom.

Thom915 hits it on the head: y'all just need to accept that younger audiences have a different way of enjoying and sharing their joy at the show, or else go on grumbling about it.
