| It is prurient but as I remember Sondheim collected quite a bit of animus from gay men over the years for not coming out, either in his personal life or in his artistic work. This feeling was particularly acute when gay men were dying of AIDS and needed advocates in high places. I know people think "Into the Woods" is an AIDS parable but Sondheim seems to have disagreed. I see pretty much all of Sondheim's musicals as "queer" but that is in retrospect. It is hard to believe but with few exceptions the commercial US entertainment industry in the 1980's was a real heterosexual boy's club, at least on the surface. |
