I have no means of comparing the current Arthur with the original but in his published account of the first production Lerner said (I am paraphrasing) Richard Burton was so mesmeric that if the attention in the scene was not supposed to be on Burton he had to get his character off the stage. An act 1 monologue given by Burton may have been a different experience to that currently offered.
