I saw Back to the Future in London, not expecting much, but had an absolutely wonderful time. I see most everything on Broadway and have become pretty jaded. But this show is just FUN, and there's a lot to be said for that. Casey Likes is better than the guy I saw play Marty in London. I think the stage craft is wonderful. I've never seen anything quite like it, and I also think the score is serviceable. It shouldn't win a Tony by any stretch, of course, but I enjoyed the songs even more the second time. Hugh Coles' Crispin Glover impression is so good that you don't mind - at least nobody seems to mind. I wasn't bothered by the car speed thing because it could only move a few inches when it actually moved. Otherwise, they used clever projections to simulate speed.
It stays pretty true to the film with some dialogue pulled word-for-word from the screenplay, but they get rid of the Libyans, which would be politically incorrect these days.
What other character has Roger done that's anything like this except maybe his role in Young Frankenstein?
I do love the movie, but I also love this adaptation. I never expected to, but here I am - loving it. |
