Camelot yesterday led me down a Lerner and Loewe rabbit hole to Brigadoon....

Saw yesterday's matinee of Camelot. Was primarily there to see Burnap since I liked him a lot in The Inheritance and wanted to hear his singing voice. Too bad he was out. I am not extremely familiar with Camelot having only seen the 1998 national tour with Robert Goulet as Arthur. But I remembered enough to know this revival is not our grandparents' Camelot. At the end of Act 1, the first thought that popped into my head was "train wreck". But after I finished the whole experiment, I grudgingly accepted that at least it was a bold attempt by Sorkin. I didn't love the updates and the preaching and lecturing but I respected his attempt to bring it into the 21st century. Burnap's understudy Fergie Philippe did an ok job but I get the sense he gives a more forceful portrayal then Burnap which sounds more nuanced on the cast recording. Phillipa Soo was perplexing. Am I misremembering how bell-like her voice was? I've seen her in everything since Great Comet at Ars Nova. Yet here she sounded like her voice was somehow trapped in her chest. It's not that she struggled to hit her high notes in head voice but every time she sang a phrase or two in head voice she seemed to retreat quickly back into chest. I don't know...maybe she was having an off day or she was coming down with something.

And now let me revel a bit in the magic that is Jordan Donica...wow!, he is the living embodiment of SWOOOON! The voice is entrancing enough but what a dashing figure he cuts on stage -- the trim fit in the armor, the hair in the pony tail -- the perfect casting for this role! He handles the humor in his early scenes just as easily as the pain and torment of his later scenes in the love triangle. I was completely smitten and couldn't stop talking about it to my friends. Turns out I know someone who went to college with him and she remembers him fondly. I hope this man has a string of leading roles lined up after this show.

I had forgotten how achingly beautiful If Ever I Would Leave You was. I started looking up other recordings on Spotify and that led me down a rabbit hole of Lerner and Lowe songs. My favorite L&L score is Brigadoon and I'm not hopeful that Broadway will ever revive that. So I started lookig around for different recordings. I missed the concert version from 2017 with Patrick Wilson and Kelli O Hara but that recording sounds great. My favorite L&L song is Heather on the Hill and they sing it sweetly. However I was a bit disappointed in There But For You Go I. I feel the true power of that song relies on a more operatic voice. (Perhaps I'm biased -- when I was in college I heard a voice student sing that at some weekly talent show and that operatic version has forever stayed with me) I stumbled onto the 1988 London revival recording of that and it features a certain Robert Meadmore who sings it powerfully yet tenderly. I'm not familiar with him but I definitely like it better than the Brent Barrett version I've had all this time. Any other Brigadoon recordings you knowledgeable people recommend? I am on such a Lerner and Loewe high these past 2 days.

I just saw a posting on the BroadwayWorld message board that might explain why Burnap missed performances all this week at ''Camelot.''

One poster claims Burnap is in England doing reshoots for ''Snow White,'' Disney's live-action remake of the animated classic.

Re: Brigadoon...
Back in 1981 there was a simply gorgeous revival of BRIGADOON on Broadway (at the Majestic Theatre) that starred Martin Vidnovic and Meg Bussert. It got glorious reviews but was "forced" out ("frozen out") by David Merrick who wanted to move his production of 42nd STREET into that theatre. And even more unfortunately - the show was never recorded. That was a real shame since the vocals were stunning by all!

I completely agree. I loved that Brigadoon in '81. It featured ice skater John Curry as Harry Beaton. And trivia*: It was Jerry Mitchell's Broadway debut.

*apologies; it wasn't "trivial," as I originally posted.

Give the Jack Cassidy / Shirley Jones / Susan Johnson / Lehman Engel recording a try. The dated mono sonics simply don't matter when the vocals are so brilliant.

Susan Johnson is the real shining star of this recording! Her rendition of "My Mother's Wedding Day" and especially "Real Love of My Life" is absolutely joyous!!!!

Yes. Yes. The Robert Goulet/Sally Ann Howe TV production of Brigadoon, though cut down, has their unmatchable singing.

I really like the Brent Barrett recording. The best I heard was when Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley did the show at The Pasadena Playhouse--They stopped the show with Almost Like Being in Love--which I didn't know from recordings that it could even become a showstopper (at a slightly increased, driving tempo). The audience went crazy. Wildly exciting!

I love Come to Me, Bend to Me (those high notes get me excited) and the best recording continues to still be IMHO the one from the movie of Brigadoon--though it was left on the cutting room floor.

There is a new "complete recording" which I like and their Almost is close to what I liked about Marin and Jason. The orchestra is excellent and the singers very good:

This Concert production of 'Brigadoon' was recorded in 2019 (out in 2021) at the Vienna Volksoper. Spotify makes it hard to find unless you type in "Brigadoon Live."

Marin and Jason did 110 IN THE SHADE at the Pasadena Playhouse. They did BRIGADOON for Reprise! at UCLA in 2004, and it is one of my all time favorite Reprise! shows. They were utter perfection.

You're so right, Laura! (Now I'm particularly missing Reprise!--when they were good, they were VERY good.

Marin was also shockingly moving, especially performing "Old Maid" in 110. Floored me.

Youtube has a wonderful compilation of Marin doing Man of La Mancha, which I loved her in on Broadway--her voice was so right for that part....

Did you sign up for Reprise 2.0 in 2018? We did, and thought the initial offering, SWEET CHARITY with Laura Bell Bundy, was terrific. Then their plans for VICTOR/VICTORIA fell through, and they substituted AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND. Nice, but nothing much. The third was supposed to GRAND HOTEL….and Reprise 2.0 evaporated without a trace. I’m still owed for three tickets for that one.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have seen so many Reprise shows (all but the first one, I think), and that my kids got to share the experience with me.

No I didn't subscribe--I cherry-picked and saw a bunch for free, too.

I can't believe the producers were able to get away with not refunding to subscribers. I'm not sure that is legal.

It was a great opportunity to catch up on some shows I hadn't seen live; Boys from Syracuse was a favorite; Call Me Madam with magnificent Karen Morrow; On the 20th Century; Kismet; Mack and Mabel; Pippin; and No Strings--were all a joy.

CALL ME MADAM was a delight. But I think the most moving one was 1776, with Roger Rees as John Adams, just after 9/11. The entire cast came out into the courtyard by the Freud Theatre, collecting for the Red Cross. Rees gave my middle daughter a kiss on the cheek when she handed him our donation. The Reprise! FOLLIES was also incredible, with Harry Groener one of the best Buddys I’ve ever seen. They performed that one at the Wadsworth, not the Freud, but I hear they tried to book it into the Shubert before it was demolished. That would have been so utterly fitting, not just because of the show’s plot, but for theatrical symmetry: the very first show in the LA Shubert was the national tour of the original FOLLIES.
