I thought the cast album of OPERATION MINCEMEAT was a total hoot, and would dearly love to see it on stage. But despite two film adaptations of the original historical events, I have the feeling this material is so veddy veddy British that it will rarely appear this side of the pond. Like BETTY BLUE EYES, another cast album I love.

Seems like this could have a nice 3 month ride out at St Ann's Warehouse! And the two film adaptations couldn't be any different from each other ( Clifton Webb doesn't even try a British accent ) plus ramping up Ian Fleming's role is a hoot!

Before the film or the musical, a few years ago I wrote a version of the story, called "A Body for the Fuhrer", for the stage. (It never went anywhere; a couple of theater companies couldn't see the interest.) I notice the musical has a love letter song. My version was told from the point of view of the corpse that was used, Glyn, who was Welsh and who was the only character on stage who spoke to the audience. No one on stage was aware of his spiritual presence, but he heard everything the others said.

Anyway, here's my version of the letter bit composed on the spot, as it were, by the less obviously attractive looking woman in the Deception office, but one who knows more about love than the attractive ones. Glyn, a homeless man, understands.

HESTER
“Bill – “
(As HESTER improvises the letter, unknowingly SHE is looking into GLYN’s eyes.)
“How can they do this to us again? We find beauty and they give us death. You can’t go. You mustn’t. It’s not possible for you to go. You’re here. You will always be here. It was the darkest of nights, but it was only a prelude, for you were the dawn. Yes, you were dawn and I could throw out all the sickly candles I used to need. You are love, and the more I have the more I want. Why can’t the world be perfect, perfect as our love? But then how would we know, and why would we love? The ring –“ They’re engaged?

EWEN
Of course.

HESTER
“The ring is nothing, but what the ring implies is the world, life, everything. I think the greatest difference a person can experience is the change from not being loved to being loved. Alone, I’m nothing. With you, I deserve kingdoms. God Almighty! Love, ... Pam.” That’ll do.

GLYN
Bravo my angel.

But not quite as good a concept as having someone go back to 1934 to save George Gershwin, Laura.

Folks, "Broadway Revival" by Laura Frankos - buy it now!!
