I feel like you think these are only minor changes, and the show that those of us already know to be Pal Joey will still be essentially recognizable. If you DON'T feel that, can you explain how far one can change a show and still be able to claim it's still the same property?

I'm not against changes being made. Every major production of Pal Joey has done that. The film, as films often do, changed a lot more, including the locale (necessitating a lyric change in the opening number) and a bunch of the songs. And of course the ending. But as I said, we've come to expect that in films.

But among the first thing this press release tells us is who will be playing Lucille and Tony. WHO??? We are then told that the character of Joey himself isn't just being "updated to modern sensibilities," but that he is getting "a complete transformation." A complete transformation?

When is Pal Joey no longer Pal Joey?

So, I feel, at least from what you've posted, that your opinion of the changes may be naive. Or even naïve. ;-)
