| The “famous title” didn’t help the show the last time they revived it in New York, and I think y’all are greatly overestimating how well known Pal Joey is to anyone under 50. This show wouldn’t have the draw of a 7-day concert, much less a commercial transfer (which we know is the goal of these galas), if they were doing the 1940 version. The question is whether the 2023 version alienates everyone who knows the original, in which case the show has the opposite problem of only appealing to folks on the nearer end of middle-aged but there’s not much name recognition (i.e. the Some Like It Hot conundrum). |
