| ''Many people will probably come having no idea this isn't ... the show as written.'' Another example is the recent revival of ''Oklahoma!'' It might've been a critics' darling on Broadway, but it wasn't such a crowd-pleaser on the road. Audiences were expecting the sunny, warm Rodgers & Hammerstein classic they knew; instead, they got Daniel Fish's dark & idiosyncratic direction. Nothing prepared them for ''Pore Jud Is Daid'' in the dark; a dream ballet turned into a rock dance solo; Curly shooting Jud to death, point-blank, etc. When I saw the tour, there were a number of walkouts; the applause was tepid, and others weren't OK with this revisionist ''Oklahoma!'' Christopher Bannow, who played Jud on the tour, wrote an essay for Howlround.com about the negative feedback the cast encountered. |

| Christopher Bannow : "I don’t have an answer, and even if I took a poll I doubt a consensus would prevail, but most of my cast members and I overwhelmingly felt that these audience members did not want to engage in the conversation." This may be an over simplification but it sounds like blaming the audience for not enjoying the production. They bought tickets for Oklahoma. | |
