Have you seen this??!! I think it’s brilliantly original and thought provoking. I can’t imagine how anyone could physically sit and watch the 24 hour version, let alone perform it. A tour-de-force for everyone.

Anyone here go to the actual performance at St Ann’s? How did the show handle the costume/makeup changes—they seem so intricate that they must have taken a long time get into and out of. What happened on stage while Mac was changing?

Taylor Mac did the show in 2 segments of 12 hours each in Philadelphia, I believe after the San Francisco and New York runs. For logistic reasons, I was only able to see about 6 hours of it, but I thought it was remarkably inventive. There was a lot of audience participation from our seats (we were given blindfolds so we could only listen, food and other stuff got passed around, etc), so it was varied and kept us engaged. There really weren't any dead spots. There was definitely a "this is a marathon that we are doing together" aspect to it as well. I'm a little surprised the documentary (which I have not yet seen) is only 1h46m, because I would have thought it would have shown longer segments.

I don't remember anything about what happened during breaks, although there must have been one during the time I was there. I'm pretty sure that the costume changes occurred on stage, as was said earlier. I don't remember them taking that long. I would jump at the chance to experience it again.

The Philadelphia marathons did not have any breaks. We were all just told to take care of ourselves as needed.

2 hour doc is enough.

I couldn’t even watch it in one sitting. I’m glad they filmed it because it does give a nice sampling of the show. One thing, Taylor Mac must have a fantastic memory to remember all those lyrics for over 200 songs.

The audience didn't sit for the entire 24 hours. There were audience participation moments throughout (some of which you can see happening in the documentary). I saw an exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design of Machine Dazzle's costumes (some of which were in the show) and it was indicated that many of the costume changes were done on stage in full view of the audience.

Mac performed the show in 2 chunks in Philadelphia. I attended the noon to midnight part which covered 12 decades from 1776-1896. It was an extravaganza with many helpers/performers/radical fairies. Many costume changes were done on stage behind a screen with Mac still narrating while being changed. Sometimes other performers sang while a change was being made or Mac was using the bathroom. There were sandwiches and snacks for sale in the lobby and we certainly made use of them!
There was a huge amount of audience participation that kept us engaged throughout. In one decade the audience was blindfolded and led to different seats so many times that when we took off our blindfolds, we were in another part of the theater next to different folks. This was part of building a community spirit which was an essential part of this fantastic evening.

Fun fact: Taylor was fast that day, so the show actually ended around 11pm.

Billhaven, we were both at the same segment! I think we were both writing our recollections at the same time. You remember it better than I do. I guess the blindfolding really stuck out for both of us.

Yes! Maybe we ended up sitting next to each other!
I also remember pelting people with ping pong balls during the Civil Ear era.
I saw another 4 hours at St . Anne’s and vividly remember the ‘30s when we stood in line for a cup of soup. And Mac’s thrilling version of Soliloquy from Carousel.
