Exactly. Whether apocryphal or not, it was pretty hard to be a gay man involved in musical theatre in NYC who didn't have a friend or a friend-of-a-friend who had supposedly seen Sondheim's kinky basement dungeon.
And just like Carol Channing's supposedly overheard quotations or various urban legends of performances of WEST SIDE STORY where Chino's gun didn't go off...
all I know is that it's awfully fun to shout out, "Poison boot!"
