The audience didn't sit for the entire 24 hours. There were audience participation moments throughout (some of which you can see happening in the documentary). I saw an exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design of Machine Dazzle's costumes (some of which were in the show) and it was indicated that many of the costume changes were done on stage in full view of the audience.

Mac performed the show in 2 chunks in Philadelphia. I attended the noon to midnight part which covered 12 decades from 1776-1896. It was an extravaganza with many helpers/performers/radical fairies. Many costume changes were done on stage behind a screen with Mac still narrating while being changed. Sometimes other performers sang while a change was being made or Mac was using the bathroom. There were sandwiches and snacks for sale in the lobby and we certainly made use of them!
There was a huge amount of audience participation that kept us engaged throughout. In one decade the audience was blindfolded and led to different seats so many times that when we took off our blindfolds, we were in another part of the theater next to different folks. This was part of building a community spirit which was an essential part of this fantastic evening.

Fun fact: Taylor was fast that day, so the show actually ended around 11pm.

Billhaven, we were both at the same segment! I think we were both writing our recollections at the same time. You remember it better than I do. I guess the blindfolding really stuck out for both of us.

Yes! Maybe we ended up sitting next to each other!
I also remember pelting people with ping pong balls during the Civil Ear era.
I saw another 4 hours at St . Anne’s and vividly remember the ‘30s when we stood in line for a cup of soup. And Mac’s thrilling version of Soliloquy from Carousel.
