I was fortunate enough to see Judi Dench in AMY’S VIEW and Maggie Smith in A GERMAN LIFE. However I’ve never seen Imelda Staunton live. (She had left FOLLIES by the time I saw it).
I don’t have a lot specifics around AMY’S VIEW except I remember how physical her performance was. Flopping on a couch or something like that. She seemed to be all over the stage, and by far, the best thing about the production.
Maggie Smith’s performance I will never forget. Her delivery was so natural that it didn’t feel like a performance at all. It was as if the character were talking to you in person. It was hypnotic. On the flip side, it meant it lacked her signature delivery on great biting lines. In November 2020, there was talk of a film version with Smith (it’s based on a documentary). Not sure if anything has come of it. It would be great to capture her performance. It was unlike anything I’ve seen. |
