Posted by: ChorusBoy999 11:24 am EDT 07/17/23

Full casting is set for Here We Are, the final musical by Stephen Sondheim, which premieres this fall at the Shed.

Here We Are features a score by Sondheim, a book by David Ives, and direction by Joe Mantello. It is inspired by two films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, by Luis Buñuel.

The cast will include Francois Battiste, Tracie Bennett, Bobby Cannavale, Micaela Diamond, Amber Gray, Jin Ha, Rachel Bay Jones, Denis O’Hare, Steven Pasquale, David Hyde Pierce, and Jeremy Shamos. The understudies for Here We Are are Bradley Dean, Adam Harrington, Bligh Voth, Adante Carter, Mehry Eslaminia, and Lindsay Nicole Chambers.

Sorry if this was covered in the past, but do we know if the second act is going to be presneted as is (as I understand it, incomplete) or if someone has been designated to write material in Sondheim's absence?

Anyone have an answer about this?

Very curious. I also wonder why they aren't using Nathan. Is he booked?

So they’re waiting until they go on sale tomorrow to spring them on us?

Of the 11 actors announced, nine have either won or been nominated for Tony Awards. If this were a baseball game, these are all-star players.

I was thinking about it a little bit differently. This is an extremely talented cast (which I guess I was taking for granted given the circumstances for this show), but not really a legend-filled cast. If I have counted correctly, I think eight of the 11 have been nominated for a Tony (Steven Pasquale, Francois Battiste and Jin Ha have not), but only two have actually won (David Hyde Pierce and Rachel Bay Jones, both of whom deserved to win but I would not say either gave an iconic performance). I'm not sure the person who sees two or three Broadway shows a year would know who most of these actors are.

That they did not go for theater legends is not a bad thing -- one could argue that it is a good thing, that they seem to be casting for who is right for the role rather than who they are. And it also make me think that this is a show with a true ensemble cast, where no one is sticking out as the lead.

Having won or not won a Tony is irrelevant. These are some of the most talented performers working in the theater today.

My bad. I thought Pasquale had been nominated for "Bridges of Madison County." As for counting who among this group have won a Tony, don't forget Denis O'Hare has one.

I mostly agree with your post--just reminding that Denis O'Hare does indeed have a Tony.

Thank you for noticing (and for such a nice, gentle reminder!), and how could I forget that! He actually gave an iconic performance in Take Me Out IMO. Miles ahead of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's work (again, IMO). It also sticks out for me because it was one of the first Tony-winning performances I had ever seen. At that time, I would typically see a show on tour or after ticket demand came down well into the run, by which time there was a replacement cast. I saw Take Me Out in the last couple of months of the run, when many of the actors had left but O'Hare was still in it. So that was one of the first "Ah, that's what all the fuss is about" performances I had ever seen live on stage.

O'Hare used to be a regular on the New York stage (8 Broadway appearances from 1995-2010 according to ibdb and many more in iobdb), but it doesn't look like he has been in a show in New York since the Public's Into the Woods in 2012. Has he done theater anywhere else since then?

Here is a partial answer to your question. I hadn't realized "An Illiad" had made such a journey!

I'm not sure when it was, but Denis moved to Paris with his husband. he stated that it was to show his displeasure with conditions in the U.S. I guess he's back, at least for a while, and that's certainly a good thing for theater-goers.
