I was thinking about it a little bit differently. This is an extremely talented cast (which I guess I was taking for granted given the circumstances for this show), but not really a legend-filled cast. If I have counted correctly, I think eight of the 11 have been nominated for a Tony (Steven Pasquale, Francois Battiste and Jin Ha have not), but only two have actually won (David Hyde Pierce and Rachel Bay Jones, both of whom deserved to win but I would not say either gave an iconic performance). I'm not sure the person who sees two or three Broadway shows a year would know who most of these actors are.
That they did not go for theater legends is not a bad thing -- one could argue that it is a good thing, that they seem to be casting for who is right for the role rather than who they are. And it also make me think that this is a show with a true ensemble cast, where no one is sticking out as the lead. |
