TDF-IS IT WORTH IT?
Posted by: Glamourboy 03:50 pm EDT 07/17/23

I live in LA and come to NY about 3 times a year...between the TKTS booth and the lotteries I am usually able to see much of what I want to see (I usually limit it to 3 shows a trip). I've seen people on here talk about TDF and I'm wondering if it might be worth it for someone who lives out of town....how much are tickets generally as a member? Have you been able to get a lot of use out of it?

TDF is always worth it because of what you're supporting.

It's only $40.

I have been a member for many years, and I ALWAYS find it worth it. Even if you only buy a ticket or two per year, you will more than save the membership cost. It'll encourage you to take a chance on an unfamiliar show, one in previews, a show that you've somehow missed seeing earlier in its run, or one that you've seen already with another cast. It's a good deal for you, and a way to support tdf's work bringing theater access to a wider audience.

Can't sing the praises of TDF enough. In the last two years alone, I've seen countless shows I might not have purchased seats for even at TKTS. I ended up with -- off the top of my head -- house seats for Flying Over Sunset, Trouble in Mind, Girl from North Country, The Minutes, Funny Girl (fourth row center, a Benko) and this season, Grey House, Fat Ham (first row), Sidney Brustein's window (third row center) Doll's House (seventh center), Kimberly Akimbo (approximately the same) Shucked, and recently Camelot. Not everyone can go on random weeknights, or my performance, the Wednesday matinee, but the seats are often spread among the full complement of performances, even Saturday nights. Can't imagine life without TDF.

I agree with all the positives. Folks have complained about the increase in prices, but in my experience seats given have been consistently good as the prices have gone up (and as I use it more in the last few months). It's as if producers/box offices value the word of mouth offered by TDF members...

I find it interesting that folks complain about the escalation of TDF seats prices, when the final cost puts you in a seat that's likely close to 1/3 of the box office price. Again, because I've often been given house seats or the equivalent, I can only see the advantages. There was a fair amount of grousing about the price of the Shubert balcony seats, that TDF wasn't saving money. But if you land in the center of the first few rows, as I did, you end up with the best balcony seats for the least cash spent. TDF fills empty seats; it's not about consumer demands for ideal locations. I've had some disappointing seats (A Strange Loop, last row of mezz) but even in those instances, I'm saving money. To compare TDF seats with box office or even flyer discounts probably isn't fair.

Why don't you try it for a year and see how it works out for you. The cost to join isn't that much and you may decide to see an additional show because your a member. I've been a member for years and don't use TDF that often, but I maintain membership. I agree with Ann's posting.

I come in 3-5 times a year. Usually, I want to know where I'm sitting and I buy ahead (and I have some company memberships). But this last trip, I saw two Broadway shows and one Off-B on TDF. Broadway was $59 + fees and Off-Broadway (at the Park Ave Armory) was $51. About half the price of the TKTS seat I bought. Seats were very good: mezz side, just off the aisle two or four rows up, and the Armory was a good close-to-middle seat in the center about halfway up. I saw two other Broadway shows on TDF in November and the seats were good.

I have had Broadway TDF tickets in the past that were very high up in the mezzanine (not great - for me - for plays in particular). Usually, if it's Broadway, I'll try if: a) it's very early previews, and/or b) I either don't think I'll love it or I already have another ticket for later. Also, I'm usually buying a single and that usually works out better (for instance, this time I sat between two couples or between an aisle single and a couple). Maybe others have better results, but I probably wouldn't try if I wanted to sit with someone else.

I don't remember what the current subscription price is, but at least this year, I've gotten my money out of it. And I'm fine with contributing to the organization.

Think of it as a Contribution

I think that the hundred bucks or so for Lincoln Center or the 42 bucks to TDF or the membership at Atlantic Theater Co or Second Stage and so on is actually a small support for their commitment to theater and the cultural life of New York. I buy subscriptions to dance and music groups even though I know I can't make it to all their offerings (even Encores?) because I know they need the money and it's a nice thing to do.
