A group of Lea Salonga fans apparently snuck backstage and appeared at the door of her dressing room at ''Here Lies Love.'' They claimed to be friends of one of the show's lead producers, but it would turn out that that producer had no idea who they were. These fans were not on Salonga's guest list, so she firmly turned them away and graciously escorted them to the area near the building's exit.

Salonga posted this on her Twitter: ''When one of our lead producers and our dance captain saw the video [of the incident] and learned about what happened, they said, “You were still very nice, if that were me, I would’ve cussed at them and kicked them out.” I’m not the type to cuss people out, but I will protect my territory and my boundaries. If I lose fans as a result, so be it.''

Maybe these fans were visiting a Broadway theater for the first time and didn't know the proper protocol or etiquette. but the one who posted the video of the incident, also posted a reaction to what happened, and it smacks of entitlement:

''If we are ever wrong and not on the guest list, the fact is that we are there just to take pictures. We lined up and paid dearly for the Show, maybe as Filipinos and FANS we can be given at least a little RESPECT AND AT LEAST NO HUGS OR KISSES, you will be allowed to take a PICTURE."

To that fan: No matter how much you ''paid dearly'' for tickets, you are NOT entitled to backstage visits or selfies. And brava to Salonga's response!

that's a big fiasco, I was there visiting Lea backstage, I was the one in the beginning of that video saying goodnight and witnessed that entire thing live.
She was so gracious to those people and actually led them near the exit and took photos with them before they exited. The guy filming illegally cut that off.

Playbiil.com has posted a followup story with more details, plus the name of the digital creator who took the backstage video, etc.

As someone born and raised in the Philippines, I have to sadly confirm
that this is standard-issue Filipino fan behavior, as I’m sure Lea knows very well. Celebrity fan clubs are a huge part of the culture. These fans feel that their favorite performers owe them not only face time, selfies, hugs, kisses, and what have you, but also regular updates on the intimate details of stars’ lives. If you withhold personal information or outward signs of affection and gratitude from them, these fans will pile on you, labeling you as an ingrate who’s become too big for their britches. Lea was right to set boundaries. A prompt and firm signal that you’re not going to take this kind of abuse is the only way to preempt further displays of such entitled behavior.

unhookthestars, that is very interesting. I was struck by how entitled the "fans" were, even lying that they were friends with the producer, and then being righteous and indignant afterwards on social media. Salonga was a thousand times nicer than I would have been, although it also kind of seemed like she had seen this movie before, so to speak.

Not that it matters, but my impression is that Salonga is signing and greeting fans at the stage door, so it wasn't even like these pushy people were frustrated because they really wanted to meet her and couldn't do so.

I was at some stage door many years ago where someone snuck in with other people, I think to see Jonathan Groff. It was a clueless star-struck teenager, rather than these entitled, awful people here. She came out fairly quickly, and it seemed like Groff (or whoever it was) had been very nice about the whole thing. But it's got to be challenging to be a celebrity in this social media age.

mikem — You’re right that Lea was planning to be at the stage door anyway to meet with fans. After escorting the rude fan from backstage, she even agreed to have her picture taken with him outside. Talk about class — on her part, not his — and the ability to defuse a situation!

The fan has since continued to be in the headlines in the Philippines as he contiinues to double down instead of doing the decent thing and simply apologizing. He posted on Facebook that while he liked and admired Lea, he was not really a superfan to begin with and had only tagged along with a friend. The reason why Lea wasn’t #1 on his list? Because there was really only ONE “megastar” that was worthy of that position, the singer-actress Sharon Cuneta (who was dubbed “megastar” by publicists and the public a long time ago). He says he was over the incident but does feel bad for the friends he went with who were the real Lea fans because “we were treated like trash.”

I mean, how can you reason with somebody with this line of thinking?

Thanks for sharing that story about Jonathan Groff. I’m glad he handled it well. The fan being a teenager in this case, at least the behavior was more age-appropriate although still obviously unpleasant.

These incidents, especially the one involving Lea, remind me of an Andrew Garfield fan who recently posted a tweet criticizing him for not allowing her to touch him during a fan meet-and-greet at Comic Con. The fan said that if he agreed to appear at Comic Con, he should expect to be touched by fans. What???

Lea Salonga is a real class act. If it were me, I would've refused to pose for photos with the interlopers. That ''fan'' sounds like such a jerk.

If Tonys were given for graciously dealing with fans, Salonga would deserve one. Ditto, for Jonathan Groff, who's so warm and welcoming.

Another is Zachary Levi, who turned ''She Loves Me's'' stage door into a fun party; he took the time to sign, chat and pose with everyone.
