As someone born and raised in the Philippines, I have to sadly confirm
that this is standard-issue Filipino fan behavior, as I’m sure Lea knows very well. Celebrity fan clubs are a huge part of the culture. These fans feel that their favorite performers owe them not only face time, selfies, hugs, kisses, and what have you, but also regular updates on the intimate details of stars’ lives. If you withhold personal information or outward signs of affection and gratitude from them, these fans will pile on you, labeling you as an ingrate who’s become too big for their britches. Lea was right to set boundaries. A prompt and firm signal that you’re not going to take this kind of abuse is the only way to preempt further displays of such entitled behavior. |
