This won't be terribly helpful to Peggy, but I get very nostalgic for that annual issue of the Section 2 of the Sunday Times where summer theatre schedules were published. As a kid I used to pour over them in anticipation of my family's summer vacation in Maine. I never got beyond the (wonderful) Ogunquit Playhouse but it was fascinating to see the breadth of offerings right across the country.
One would think that there was a market for a website that collated what remaining summer theatres exist. I would think it would be worth it for each theatre to support it since there are probably more than a few people like Peggy who are ripe to be wooed to get in the car and head to a theatre they've never visited.
I guess the theatres that are still offering summer seasons in the northeast are:
Ogunquit Playhouse (Maine)
Cape Playhouse (Massachusetts)
REV Theatre (Upstate NY)
Berkshire Theatre (Massachusetts)
Barrington Stage (Massachusetts)
Weston Theatre (Vermont)
and maybe most interesting all in Southern Ontario:
Stratford Festival
Shaw Festival
Drayton Entertainment (five theatres)
Blyth Festival
Thousand Islands Playhouse. |
