Any advice on the fastest way to get into Midtown from Newark airport Thursday afternoon?
Posted by: Lois (loisy@aol.com) 04:19 am EDT 07/20/23

I'm flying into Newark Thursday afternoon (4 pm arrival if on time) and was wondering what people here think is the fastest/safest way to make it to the theater district for a 7 pm show-taking the airbus from the airport or taking the train and a taxi or the subway from Penn Station? I'm not sure how bad the traffic would be going in to Manhattan after 4 pm-and I hate the 7 pm shows, which make it so much more difficult to fly in and catch a show that night, grr! Thanks for any advice.

It's definitely NJ Transit

We do this several times a month, on both weekdays and weekends (I used to drive in often on weekends but no more)

The NYC subway system is great from Penn Station, and as others have mentioned, Depending on where in midtown you want to end up, you can take the 8th Ave line (The A, the C and the E, I think) uptown to either 42nd or 50th St. or the 7th Ave uptown to the same stops but at 7th Ave.

We just went through this 2 weeks ago. The fastest way from Newark to the theatre district is taking a yellow taxi from airport. It’s between $90-$110.

It is not possible to say it is the fastest because traffic at the tunnel is not possible to predict (except sometimes when factors make it impossible not to be delayed). It is also not possible to answer without know what time the travel is going to take place. I would say that in the middle of the night a taxi is likely to be the fastest. Been there, done that. lol

My taxi was in an accident going from the airport once. The time by cab can vary widely.

But it's always the most expensive, always.

Actually, there is the helicopter. Fastest but $245.

If it is truly dire, I hope you would not be hesitant to ask for some donations from those who appreciate not only the site but also all that you are doing.

That's nice of you to say. The basic expenses at this point aren't all that much, and if necessary I will cover it.

I personally prefer the Coach bus to Port Authority

The Coach Bus goes from Newark Terminals (outside of baggage claim) directly to Port Authority. No stops. I have found it ultimately quicker and less stressful than doing the Air Train to NJ Transit.

Take the Air train. Follow the signs to Air Train.
(You will have to buy a ticket in a machine for both the Air Train and New Jersey transit. Your destination is New York Penn station. Hold onto your ticket because you will need it on the second train.)

You get off the Air Train at the Rail Link station. You look for New Jersey Transit. There you will see a schedule of trains. Take the next train that goes to New York Penn.
Once you arrive at Penn Station, walk or take subway to 42nd St.

I have taken the NJ Transit train from Newark airport (although not since the pandemic so things might have changed), and it was pretty smooth and reliable. You'll definitely make it. That being said, it takes a lot longer than you think it would, because you have to get from your gate to the Airtrain station (which could be 20-30 minutes in itself if you are at a far gate in Terminal A), then you have to wait for the Airtrain, then you have to take the Airtrain, then you have to go to the NJ Transit platform and wait for the NJ Transit train, then take the train to Penn Station. None of the steps except the NJ Transit ride are that long but it adds up. It's probably not more than 90 minutes or so total in the worst case scenario at the time of day you are going, so no worries if you've got 3 hours, but it's longer than you might think.

In terms of the tickets, there is no additional fee to use the Airtrain and I believe there is no additional ticket, but as msailing said, you need your NJ Transit ticket to get through the gates for the second train whether coming or going.

Sometimes NJ Transit has planned work/delays, and there is always the possibility of Amtrak signal problems gumming up the works.

For the former, you can check ahead. The latter is usually a surprise.

I did this route in May for the first time. I'm sure there are scenarios where it could take 90 minutes (and there are a number factors: gate location, checked/carryon baggage, train schedule, your ultimate location to drop off luggage) and it is good to plan that it might, but the estimated time for me (to my hotel ) was a little over an hour and that's about how long it took.

I was really happy with this, since now it usually takes me a fairly predictable hour to/from any of the three airports.

Also, check Google directions (or some other app) when you land to see the current drive vs public transportation time options nmi

NJTransit is your best option for price and speed.
If you do take a cab/the bus you'll be reverse commuting so traffic won't be horrific
