Take the Air train. Follow the signs to Air Train. (You will have to buy a ticket in a machine for both the Air Train and New Jersey transit. Your destination is New York Penn station. Hold onto your ticket because you will need it on the second train.) You get off the Air Train at the Rail Link station. You look for New Jersey Transit. There you will see a schedule of trains. Take the next train that goes to New York Penn. Once you arrive at Penn Station, walk or take subway to 42nd St.

I have taken the NJ Transit train from Newark airport (although not since the pandemic so things might have changed), and it was pretty smooth and reliable. You'll definitely make it. That being said, it takes a lot longer than you think it would, because you have to get from your gate to the Airtrain station (which could be 20-30 minutes in itself if you are at a far gate in Terminal A), then you have to wait for the Airtrain, then you have to take the Airtrain, then you have to go to the NJ Transit platform and wait for the NJ Transit train, then take the train to Penn Station. None of the steps except the NJ Transit ride are that long but it adds up. It's probably not more than 90 minutes or so total in the worst case scenario at the time of day you are going, so no worries if you've got 3 hours, but it's longer than you might think. In terms of the tickets, there is no additional fee to use the Airtrain and I believe there is no additional ticket, but as msailing said, you need your NJ Transit ticket to get through the gates for the second train whether coming or going.

Sometimes NJ Transit has planned work/delays, and there is always the possibility of Amtrak signal problems gumming up the works. For the former, you can check ahead. The latter is usually a surprise.

I did this route in May for the first time. I'm sure there are scenarios where it could take 90 minutes (and there are a number factors: gate location, checked/carryon baggage, train schedule, your ultimate location to drop off luggage) and it is good to plan that it might, but the estimated time for me (to my hotel ) was a little over an hour and that's about how long it took. I was really happy with this, since now it usually takes me a fairly predictable hour to/from any of the three airports.

| Also, check Google directions (or some other app) when you land to see the current drive vs public transportation time options nmi | |
