There's a fascinating new docuseries, Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York, currently airing Sundays on HBO (and on Max). It's about a serial killer who stalked and killed several gay and/or bisexual men in NY and surrounding areas in the 1990s. I had no idea such a case existed. The show is fascinating for followers of true crime, but also manages to intelligently contextualize the case in the broader LGBTQ cultural experience of NY of the early 1990s and the virulent homophobia so many faced at the height of the AIDS crisis.

AND it does so while sensitively portraying the lives of the victims profiled thus far -- many of whom whose deeply closeted identify may have made them easier targets for the killer.

I don't think anything I've posted above would be considered a spoiler, but the Broadway context, below, might be considered a minor SPOILER for those who haven't been watching. So fair warning...

Much of episode 2 is dedicated to a victim named Anthony Marrero, a gay man who was a sex worker in Manhattan. When detectives interviewed a close friend of his, the friend advised them to go interview a husband and wife couple who were described as both being Broadway actor. The husband of this Broadway couple was a regular client (i.e. a "John") of Marrero's. It seemed to be implied that the wife would have been aware of her husband's... preferences outside their marriage... but it wasn't clearly articulated either way. The detective who was featured in the series recalled that the actor acknowledged he was a client of Marrero's and was deeply saddened to learn of his murder. No further details were shared about this Broadway couple. And, I'm not sure if they will be featured again, or, if their identity will be revealed. It wasn't something I was expecting and I thought some of you might find it interesting.

The theatre has some other connections to docuseries -- including being a passion of one of the victims featured in the first episode. There are also brief mentions of theatre-related nightlife like that at Marie's Crisis, but the most prominently featured is The Townhouse, an (in)famous piano bar known for its mix of older men on the hunt and younger men with... ambition.

I believe this is a well documented case that has a specific resolution, so I know it might seem silly to treat it like narrative fiction, but if you're familiar with those particulars of the case, perhaps don't post them without adding a spoiler warning.
