it feels like a throwback in that the book feels like kind of an excuse to have musical numbers.
Right from the initial announcement of the show, I sensed trouble, when they essentially said they were using the title of the film and the title song, but otherwise this would have very little to do with the film.
Not that a direct musical translation of the film might have been any better, but it did seem that they were wanting to build a show around the popularity of the title song, and didn't really have a clear idea of how to do that. It would seem they didn't start with a specific story to tell. And so I'm not surprised to hear so many comments that the book - the story - was one of the show's major problems. |
