"Sunset Boulevard" in London with Nicole Scherzinger - rave reviews for a BONKERS (in a good way!) production

For those of you who don't obsessively check Twitter for people's thoughts on new shows in previews, people in London are freaking out (in a good way!) about the new production of "Sunset Boulevard" which has a limited run at the Savoy Theatre. Yes, the one with Nicole Scherzinger. The production is this stripped down entirely black-and-white thing, with barely any set, much less the famous grand staircase. Amazing lighting, almost no props. But a big, lush orchestra doing justice to the score -- and what sounds like a bravura performance from Scherzinger, who apparently does "crazy" really really well, and a great supporting cast making the roles their own.

Examples:

"Sunset Boulevard was thrilling, confusing, full of strange directorial choices, but truly I loved it. Not everything worked, but they cut a lot and rewrote some lyrics for the better. It was like A Doll’s House and American Psycho put together. Nicole was so weird and wonderful... “Stripped down” concepts can be annoying cuz we can feel cheated BUT this production made up for the lack of set and costumes and props by using the cameras, and the lighting and sound was truly phenomenal. The score sounded HUGE and lush and LOUD. Which was sooo refreshing... Truly the reason I liked it overall was because they made risky, weird, big choices. And some of them were REALLY WRONG. But a lot of them were, well… risky and weird!!! But holy crap it was refreshing to see a cool concept being tried on a huge scale with a beautiful score."

"I have taken an hour and I actually still cannot form the words. This revival of @sunsetblvd is without a doubt one of the most thrilling pieces of theatre I have seen in years. YEARS. Everything everyone questioned is out to rest... The opening of Act 2 is quite simply the most exciting moment I’ve had in a theatre. No spoilers, but bravo @JamieLloydCo. That really is something special."

There are photos and more reviews and perhaps some other things *cough* floating around Twitter right now if you want to see for yourself. Spoiler warning: this version sure *looks* like the bloodiest musical since the original version of "Carrie".
