Seeing the word ''grousing'' made me wonder if there's any connection between the verb of to grouse (complain) and the plump game birds that are grouse.

Are grouse, the birds, known for making grumbling noises? I Googled the etymology of ''grouse'' but couldn't find any tie-in.

Of course, ''grouse'' also makes me think of Sondheim's lyric in ''Everybody Ought to Have a Maid'' from ''Forum'': ''graceful as a grouse.'' I realize he was going for the alliteration, but given how heavily built and ungainly these birds tend to be, I doubt anyone has ever described them as ''graceful.'' ''Graceful as a swan,'' yes. But not grouse.

Also avian-related, a la Hammerstein: I've never seen a sky that's a ''bright canary yellow'' or ''a lark who is learning to pray.'' (And larks aren't even birds of prey. Ha-ha.)
