The reviews were mostly bad, and the word of mouth was pretty terrible as well. Sentiment was so turned against it, it couldn't even win book and score Tonys in a relatively weak year for those categories. I think it's one of those shows that time has caught up with, and has had many productions since. It now has the reputation of a much maligned classic. The cast album is incredible, and apparently Wolfe's staging was terrific as well. There were also a ton of stories of Mandy Patinkin being particularly toxic backstage. I think he's acknowledged his bad behaviour since.

Fun fact: Vanessa Williams was originally announced for Queenie, and Keith David was originally announced for Eddie.
