| The Broadway production was relentlessly ugly and over played. Patinkin began the evening in one of his rabid, “ somewhat over indulgent” mode and had no place to go. If I hadn’t been in the middle of a row I would have left. It seemed determined to prove its edginess. It wasn’t until I listened to the cast recording that I realized how brilliant the score is. Someone with a surer touch need to revive it. |
