| One of the best things I've ever seen on Broadway, and I've seen a lot of things. I think the musical itself is a very underrated masterwork. It's got one of the most dazzling and fun and dark and effective scores I've heard in decades, it's layered, is smart, it's sexual, it's scary, it's insightful, funny, sad. What LaChiusa and Wolfe were able to get in there, in terms of exploring the themes and characters of the piece, as a microcosm of the time and humanity in general, I think it's really something. People often criticism it for trying to do too much, to have too many characters, and I don't find that true here, I think it sets up everyone beautifully, builds them, intertwines them, and then knocks them down/pays it off, all in service of a whole that gels *for me*, even if not for everyone. When I saw it I remember being just on the edge of my seat from the first song. Not just at how engaged I was in the show/party, but song after song was killer. I had recently seen Marie Christine, which I loved too but had many more issues with the show and score, and found much harder to access and love at first... and then I saw this and thought to myself "he actually can write for Broadway if he wants to!" And the cast... my goodness. Toni Collette gave one of the best performances I've ever seen in a musical. But you know who else did? Mandy Patinkin. And I can't say enough about the rest of the cast either, especially Tonya Pinkins, Norm Lewis and Marc Kudisch. And... well.. Eartha Kitt was delivered on a platter. She was poured into the role, and she was just perfect. I am so glad I saw it while it ran. I can't say what went wrong in terms of it having a run on Broadway ... but hey, with a total of 104 performances, it could have been worse! No one says that, but it's true. |
