They had terrible luck when it came to casting the romantic lead of Black. They wanted someone who would project Rudolf Valentino/Latin Lothario sex appeal and magnetic chemistry with both Queenie and Kate (George Wolfe's dream was to get a not-yet-famous Ricky Martin), but the person they found never felt comfortable in his skin, much less so sexy you just need to gobble him up. He also never found the mooch in Black, there was no sense of hustle or charm offensive, and I am not even sure he was doing much in the way of acting, so it was really left to both Toni Collette and Tonya Pinkins to perform both sides of the relationship in order to carry the story.

It might not have made a difference, but it did leave a gaping hole in a production that was already battling an uphill current in terms of audience sentiment.

As for the other male lead, there's a reason this was Patinkin's last Broadway musical: he choice violence. Both on stage and off, he was moody, gloomy, and feral, with reports that he was being physically inappropriate on stage with Collette, either slapping her aggressively rather than stage slapping, or pinching her backside when he wasn't supposed to, but he took the directive that Burr is a psychopath and method acted the fudge out of it. When he was briefly announced for Natasha Pierre, many of us in New York theater felt sorry for that cast and how they might be terrorized by Patinkin, that is how much his behavior from Wild Party followed him around.
