| While he is quite literally a poor man's Hank Azaria, his casting (through January) is a step in the right direction. Michael Urie and Christopher Fitzgerald are, in my mind, the only other bright spots in this otherwise-disasterous revival (of a show that I think is incredibly fun and worthy of a big splashy revival!). Leslie Kritzer will be fine. But some of these other names ... woof. Bringing it direct from the Kennedy center -- with minimal casting changes -- is a huge liability. Centering this show around James Monroe Iglehart is an immediate 'no' for me, a guy who LOVES THIS SHOW. The original cast was exceptional, across the board. Pitch perfect tone and design, almost all which will inevitably be carbon-copied for this production -- though heavily diluted. Most of this casting would barely raise my pulse if I lived in Phoenix, let alone New York City. Unless this show is somehow some comedic gem that explodes from the stage, I expect poor grosses and an early exit. (BTW -- Please please please fix this website soon. I know it's a small group of volunteers who run this, but you have ad buys! Surely that should help fund some college intern who has taken a single coding class. Why does this site all of a sudden look and operate as if it's 1998? Create a crowdfunding campaign and I'm sure a bunch of us would throw $10 your way.) |
