| Full disclosure: I contributed to Opera News as a freelance writer for the better part of a decade. Sadly, I have to agree that the direction of the magazine took a negative turn in recent years, particularly due to Peter Gelb's hostile attitude toward anything that could be perceived as negative coverage of the institution. I know multiple people who discontinued their subscriptions as the magazine moved further away from seriously covering music and essentially became the classical music version of Town and Country. I'm sad for the good people who worked there who are now out of a job, but really, it outlived its utility as a publication. |
