| I can't and won't comment on issues of actual abuse where Patinkin is concerned - I don't know the facts and don't wish to go down that rabbit hole regardless. But I will say that as much as I think he is insanely talented, he is also consistently one of the most offputting actors I have ever seen and heard. From his self-indulgent ruining of "Buddy's Blues" in the Follies concert to his eccentric spastic gesturing in Sunday In The Park, to a rather weird self-indulgent story he told about his Evita staging in a documentary about Hal Prince, I just can't understand what he's doing much of the time. I don't tend to like performers who always have to make the show all about them when it's not, and I don't tend to like performers who constantly need to show us how f-ing hard they're working all the time. (Shouldn't the magic of theatre be about making it all seem so easy??) Even little things like the overdone low notes in his rendition of "I Wish I Could Forget You" on his Oscar & Steve CD. He can't not call attention to himself. The song would have been so much better if he had just sung the notes instead of overdoing them. (And let's not forget that the over the top ending of his "Over The Rainbow" was a running joke on Letterman for a long time.) Again, he's got such an amazing instrument, no denying that. But putting up with his constant overwrought-ness is just too much for me. I have to imagine he's essentially undirectable - you hire Mandy and you get MANDY!!! and that's it. Kind of a shame. End of rant, and honestly sorry to say all this. | |
