| I agree with you on all points and I've been mystified as to why Killam hasn't had a bigger post-SNL career. He was truly one of the shining lights on that show during the years he was there. My first theory is that the sketch comedy format was the perfect utilization of his talents and, once you leave SNL, the pinnacle of sketch comedy in the US, what do you do after that? My second theory is that he really wanted to move to LA to spend more time with his wife, actress Cobie Smulders, who is best known for her run on the sitcom HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, but who also has a recurring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and their two kids. And maybe the movers and shakers in LA just don't know what to do with him or how to position him to move on to other things in his career. His run on Broadway as King George in HAMILTON happened at the same time his wife was also in New York on Broadway in PRESENT LAUGHTER with Kevin Kline, et al. His run at City Center in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS would have been a very brief time committment. And his upcoming run in SPAMALOT is also reletively brief, just until the new year when Alex Brightman is available to return to the role he originated in DC at the Kennedy Center. So my money is on theory #2 and I doubt we'll ever see him have the significant theatre career that he could have unless Cobie Smulders needs to also relocate to New York for her own career. And I think it's admirable that he's able to step back and make the best decision for his family, even if it's to the detriment of his own career. |
