Many years ago, when Julius Rudel was running NYCO the orchestra went on strike - and the back and forth with management was not pleasant, and much was public. An orchestra member or may be union rep told the newspapers that the NYCO orchestra wanted parity with the NY Philharmonic. This was too much for Rudel. When asked about this by a reporter he espinded by saying: 'If anyone in our orchestra wants to get a job with the NYPO, and thinks they can get one, they should." The strike settled soon after that acrimonious exchange.
