| What a boring night at the theater. There is no fourth wall. I would say 75% of the show is narrative directed to the audience. Just snippets of scenes to convey any drama or emotion, which is completely lacking in the first act of 90 minutes establishing the show Soul Train. A few interesting ideas (black ownership of the show because the white studio heads didn't think it would work) and convincing black artists to go on the show that wasn't established like Dick Clark's. It's not until the second act that his son shows up to work for Don Cornelius that we finally get any type of emotion out of the show. As my friend said, the cast never touched each other in a hug or embrace--and that really sums up the coldness of the book. I did like the progression of music styles (disco to hip hop to ??) which Don didn't want to do but was forced to keep the show relevant. And the platitudes of legacy and death were just meaningless. The cast did its best with the material, but the material is just bad. |
