Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends in London Monday Night

I saw the show Monday night and was not disappointed. The entire cast was top notch and with the exception of two noticeable mistakes everything else lived up to expectations. As for the mistakes, Gavin Lee went up on his lyrics in “The Little Things You Do Together” and Jason Pennycock sang the same lyrics for both the Margie and Sally verses of Buddy’s Blues. It may sound picky but when the entire house is full of die hard Sondheim fans, singing along in their heads, it’s hard not to notice the mistakes. Bernadette Peters was fine and looked fantastic ( I was sitting fourth row center stalls.) It’s a shame she made her West End debut with this show. The man next to me told his friend the she was “not known for her singing voice.” I didn’t expect her at 75 to have the same vocal prowess she had at 35. Lea Salonga was awesome and belted out the high notes when needed. Jeremy Secomb was very good as Sweeney and Bradley Jaden was the sexiest wolf I’ve ever seen. Joanna Riding was particularly strong. The orchestra was awesome and the set and costumes were more than I expected. All in all, it was an excellent musical review, no better than say Putting it Together or Side by Side by Sondheim but considering the talent on the stage, it was well worth it.
