Eh, I'm so tired of the tired "big productions distract us from the text" kind of narrative.
ALW is actually not an especially good dramatist... his shows, especially the ones that got "big" productions, were conceived and written FOR those big productions. Some of them lend themselves to paired down production and experimental takes more than others... I'm very curious about this Sunset, and the new Cats (as ridiculous as it sounds), and Evita always had a paired down production that worked to add to the dramatist work that has been abandoned with new productions (that aren't the Prince) favoring a literal take that not only doesn't serve the piece as written but hurts it.
I think what we will see more than anything is the work of creative directors shinning, not a new appreciation for the dramatic nuance and mastery of ALW and his lyricists. I think the things that work in his scores will work and soar with or without a big splashy production, it's just a question of if the entire show justifies itself when not happily matching big score with big production. |
