It's a fascinating work, absolutely worth seeing. I find the claim that the lack of music in the second is purposeful to be completely plausible, even if the question of what might have been written during previews had Sondheim lived will always linger over the finished work.
For me the best song of the evening (there are no titles in the program) was the one sung by Jin Ha and Micaela Diamond. Flashes of peak Sondheim, but finding an entirely new form to experiment with.
It's very weird, often hilarious, sometimes moving, and a showcase for incredible performers. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. |
