His Lear was remarkable, in the 1982 RSC production, directed by Adrian Noble, with Anthony Sher as the fool. He was powerful and touching. His theatrical bond with the fool (they performed some sections as a music hall partner act) made Lear more human than most. Lear accidentally killed the Fool by stabbing madly at a barrel where the Fool was hiding, thus killing his own reason (and poignantly explaining the Fool’s disappearance from the play.)

After many Lears, it’s still the one I use as the benchmark of what Lear can be.

Just one of many great performances by a great actor.
