And, contrary to even reports I've seen from people who were there last night, there actually is singing in the second act, briefly at its start.
The moment when the characters stop singing is totally logical. As an exercise in form, it strikes me as perfectly Sondheimian for the music to disappear.
The only spot where I thought "Huh, I really would have liked to hear some singing again" was the very end of the show, but even still the way the show ends is not out of step with the evening we see. |
