Saw the final performance last night and really enjoyed it. The cast was very talented. Young Benjamin Pajak's acting was really strong, as was his singing. Depending on what his voice sounds like after it changes, he would seem to be really good casting for the Michael Rupert role in "The Happy Time" should Encores or some other venue produce it in a few years. Great Kander and Ebb score.
As for "Golden Rainbow", it was a fun evening from a time when shows really meant to entertain without feeling compelled to lay out a message and lay it on thick. One could see in Mara Davi's fine performance of her songs that these were created very much to show off Eydie Gorme's voice to best advantage. Plus Walter Marks wrote a big hit tune for Steve Lawrence which was covered by nearly all the top singers on all the variety shows on tv at the time of the original production. |
