I've been looking at my phone settings but can't find it because I'm dumb that way.

On an iPhone, scroll all the way to the bottom in Settings/Notifications.

If you tap on "Emergency Alerts" there, you can both shut them off completely and prevent the sound.

Per The Washington Post: “If you have a phone that you absolutely do not want to make a sound - for instance, if you are in an abusive relationship and have a hidden device - there is something you can do. Turn it off before 2:20 p.m. Eastern and do not turn it on for at least 30 minutes. The alerts should not send after 2:50 p.m. Eastern.”
Link An emergency alert will hit phones today. Here’s what to expect.

Thank you! I remember now that there Is a hack for people with hidden phones. Obviously, I was in a good situation, seeing Alexander Zeldin's The Confessions in Paris (I hope it comes to NYC). My phone would have gone off at 8:20, assuming the alert works all the way in France which it probably doesn't, but I was careful not to turn the phone back on until the play was over since 1) I didn't want to disturb anyone anyway and 2) I didn't know if it would make a noise belatedly. I'm glad to understand how it works. And I'm still wondering if we'll get reports of any going off in theaters!
