What with Stephen Sondheim writing “Send in the Clowns” for her and winning a Tony award for “A Little Night Music”, and a huge amount of work on stage and screen, Ms. Johns has had a marvelous career. Especially famous for her “Sister Suffragette” Mrs. Banks in “Mary Poppins”, she’s also particularly fabulous in “The Sundowners” and “The Chapman Report”, among many other films. A look at her Wikipedia page shows an incredible amount of work as one of the last surviving actors from both the Golden Age of Hollywood as well as the British classical era of film. She’s currently the oldest living actor who was nominated for an Academy Award. It's amazing she played Desiree half a lifetime ago. Much birthday cheer and congratulations!

Glynis Johns really has had an incredibly prolific, diverse career that (remarkably) stretches back to the 1930's. Besides the films you mentioned, some of my favorites are State Secret, No Highway in the Sky, The Court Jester, Shake Hands with the Devil, While You Were Sleeping, but many, many others also.

She was quite lovely and funny with that unique speaking voice immediately identifiable in a great cast including Michael Wilding, Paulette Goddard, Diana Wynyard, C. Aubrey Smith and Hugh Williams. The Cecil Beaton costumes are quite sumptuous in the beautiful Technicolor, and it's an enjoyable version of Oscar Wilde's play.

I think we here on ATC have a particular fondness for Miss Johns given her indelible performance of Stephen Sondheim's most famous song and the fact that it was written with her vocal qualities in mind. Coupled with her performance in an all-time classic film that has helped rear generations of people worldwide (pretty much anyone under 75 grew up on Mary Poppins), it makes us feel that she is a legend. But her career, though successful and well-remembered, has not been legendary. A damehood would be lovely and welcomed, but she really hasn't been working since 1999.

Most importantly I should be saying: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MISS JOHNS!!!"
